Allan Savory’s recent TED presentation has garnered some great attention for the Holistic Management concept outside of the general agricultural circles. Although the video is already posted on many sites on the net I thought I would go ahead and put it up here to keep spreading the word. I’m also adding a link to another longer, more in depth presentation by Savory on Vimeo.
Although I try not to put too much of my opinion in my posts (my opinion doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things) I would like to make a point… It doesn’t matter if your a vegan, vegetarian (or other variants thereof), omnivore, total carnivore, capitalist, socialist, Christian, Buddhist, Hindi, or whatever!!! The point is, managing herd animals in a holistically planned grazing system will restore a degraded or desertified grassland back to a fully functional grassland. Period. And in doing so it will sequester much carbon in the soil system making the ecosystem, as a whole, more healthy. Period.
From a holistic management viewpoint, I think there is much flexibility to decide what the final disposition of those animals may be depending on one’s personal convictions.
Actually, you don’t even necessarily have to be a “believer” in climate change or global warming. (I know, heresy considering Savory’s focus). Holistic management is proven to return degraded land to a healthy state. Pretty straight forward if you want to look at it from that perspective alone.
On to the videos. (It should be noted that there are also many other Savory videos on youtube and vimeo.)
